Elastic Path Takes the Upgrade Burden Out of Self-Managed Commerce with New AI Upgrader

Elastic Path merchants can now evaluate, enrich, and monitor how AI shopping agents interpret their product catalogs

BOSTON, Mass. — October 8, 2026 — Elastic Path, the AI-ready commerce platform built for B2B, today announced the latest release of Elastic Path Self-Managed Commerce, including the new Self-Managed Commerce Upgrader. The Upgrader integrates with Claude Code and other CLI-based LLMs to automate large portions of the platform upgrade process. Upgrades that used to be multi-month projects now become routine maintenance.

Elastic Path Self-Managed Commerce is built for enterprises that need to own their commerce stack. Some have data that must stay inside their own perimeter because of residency law, sovereign-cloud mandates, or security policy. Others have engineering teams that need the full source code for security audits, for extending the platform at any layer, and for an exit path their legal team can point to. Customers deploy it single-tenant in one of three ways: on-premise, in their own cloud, or through Elastic Path Managed Hosting.

"Enterprises choose Elastic Path Self-Managed Commerce for control that SaaS platforms can't offer: over their infrastructure, their data, and every line of source code," said Bryan House, CEO of Elastic Path. "The tradeoff has always been upgrades. When every extension has to be reviewed and reconciled by hand, often over weeks or months, companies delay, and technical debt and security exposure builds up. This release removes that tradeoff. With AI doing the heavy lifting, upgrading becomes a routine maintenance task. Our customers keep the control they chose us for without paying for it in developer time."

Elastic Path Self-Managed Commerce processes tens of billions in annual GMV across its customer base and has sustained 200 orders per second. Fortune 500 commerce programs run their highest-stakes events on it, including T-Mobile's flagship smartphone launches and high-demand collectible drops at The Pokémon Company international. For these companies, upgrading is critical to maintain both security and peak performance.

Removing the tradeoff between control and recency

Full data and source code control has traditionally come with a cost. Customers who build deep customizations have to reconcile every extension by hand against each new release, and extensive testing follows. These maintenance timelines can negatively impact the business when they drag on for too long or impact peak traffic times. The new Self-Managed Commerce Upgrader applies AI to that work by:

  • Breaking each upgrade into discrete steps.
  • Pairing each step with its own prompt and validation command.
  • Creating an upgrade sequence for development teams to follow, with built-in checks at every stage (vs.auditing customizations against a changelog line by line).
  • Teams using the Upgrader are completing upgrades up to six times faster than with previous manual approaches.

"As a beta partner for Self-Managed Commerce Upgrader, we've been applying our patches with it, and the impact of it for our team's patch and version upgrades has been significant,” said Priyadarshini Jayakumar, Manager, Product and Engineering at T-Mobile. “Manual version upgrades used to take three or four developers. Now it takes about half of one, with AI handling the merges, conflict resolution, and build fixes, and our engineers reviewing every change. Going forward, patches will be handled as a non-causal activity within our sprints and that is a great value-add to us."

A current, secure stack on the customer's schedule

Elastic Path keeps the platform current so customers don't inherit aging dependencies:

  • Self-Managed Commerce is certified on Azul Zulu OpenJDK 21 with Tomcat 10.1.
  • Major library dependencies are upgraded on a regular release cadence.
  • The platform is scanned daily for vulnerable libraries across the dependency tree.

Patches ship to customers, who apply them on their own schedule. With the Upgrader, staying current no longer competes with roadmap work or peak traffic times.

New AI-assisted development and flexibility for Self-Managed Commerce

Self-Managed Commerce now ships with an AGENTS.md file and additional AI context guides built into the repository. These give coding tools like Claude Code the structural and conventional context they need to work reliably across the platform, for both upgrades and new development.

The release also adds capabilities across pricing, promotions, and B2B:

  • Recurring and subscription pricing alongside one-time pricing
  • More flexible promotion conditions and integration with external promotion engines
  • Optional dependent-item suggestions at add-to-cart
  • Performance improvements for high-volume, single-session traffic

Elastic Path Self-Managed Commerce 8.8 and the Self-Managed Commerce Upgrader are available now.
